What’s the Difference Between a Gel Polish Base Coat and a Top Coat?

Although they work together, a base coat and a top coat serve very different purposes.

A base coat is applied before your gel polish colour. It prepares the nail, protects it from staining, and helps the colour adhere better.

Choosing the right base coat depends on the kind of manicure experience you’re looking for. A top coat is applied after your gel polish colour. Its role is to protect the colour, extend the wear of your manicure, and add shine.

How to Apply Base Coat and Top Coat

Start by preparing your nails and ensuring they are clean, dry, and free from any oils or residue.

Apply a thin layer of your chosen base coat. If you’re using our Base Coat, cure it under a UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds. If you’ve chosen our Peel-Off Base Coat, simply let it air dry for a few moments, no lamp is needed.

Once your gel polish colour has been applied and cured, finish your manicure with a thin layer of Top Coat. Cure the top coat under a UV/LED lamp for 60 seconds to seal in the colour and protect your manicure.

After curing your top coat, you may notice a slightly sticky or tacky layer on the nails. This is completely normal and is part of the curing process. To reveal the final glossy finish, simply wipe each nail with our Prep & Wipe using a lint-free pad. This removes the sticky residue and leaves your manicure looking smooth, shiny, and salon-perfect.

How the ColorMe Gel Polish Peel-Off Base Coat Works

The Peel-Off Base Coat is designed for easy, damage-free removal of your gel manicure. Instead of creating a permanent bond, it forms a flexible layer that allows you to gently lift off your gel polish when you’re ready for a new look. Unlike traditional systems, the Peel-Off Base Coat does not require a gel bonder, making your routine even simpler and more flexible.

When you’re ready to remove your manicure, gently lift the gel polish from the side of the nail using a cuticle stick or your fingertip. The gel polish should peel off easily without damaging the natural nail. If needed, you can softly push underneath until the entire layer comes off in one piece. For best results, avoid forcing the product and always remove it gently to keep your nails healthy.

How to Achieve the Best Gel Polish Finish

Some nails may develop a slightly dull finish over time. This can happen when the tacky layer is removed too quickly after curing, when the top coat is applied too thickly, or through exposure to cleaning products and everyday wear.

To achieve and maintain the best shine, we recommend waiting for 30–60 seconds after curing the top coat before removing the tacky layer with a lint-free wipe and cleanser. Apply the top coat in a thin, even layer and, whenever possible, wear gloves when using cleaning products to help preserve a long-lasting glossy finish.
